The Genealogies of Jesus, in Luke and Matthew

Here are both of the genealogies of Jesus given to us by Matthew and Luke, showing both Mary and Joseph’s lineage. Similar to Adam, Jesus had no earthly biological father, and in that way both Jesus and Adam could be called “sons of God.” Yet just like the rest of humanity, Jesus was a real person with a real lineage, and in that way he can be called a “son of man.” Ironically, although being a son of man implies humanity, the one “like a son of man” in Daniel 7 refers to God’s unique and “set apart” One to come in the last days. This was also Jesus’ favorite name for himself (Matthew 8:20, Matthew 8:20, Luke 22:48). So the title “Son of man” actually points to the deity of Christ as the true Son of God.

We see in these genealogies that Jesus’ parents both descended from David, also fulfilling prophecy (Psalm 132:11, Jeremiah 23:5-6). What is fascinating about Matthew’s list is that he includes four women, all of whom were likely Gentiles (non-Jews), and at least three of whom are known to have been involved in some kind of immorality. Instead of leaving them out, which would have been easier, by listing these women Matthew proudly shows that Jesus is both our God and Redeemer, full of grace and truth, who came to love and save sinners. These four women became the mothers of our King and Savior, Jesus Christ.
