Have you noticed there’s no verse 7 in the ESV translation of Acts 24? Verses were actually not numbered in ancient Bibles; verse numbers were introduced by printer Robert Estienne in the 16th century. Since then, scholars have also gained access to some of the oldest Bible manuscripts available, and these ancient manuscripts appear to have never included certain texts found in the verse once numbered as Acts 24:7, leading ESV translators to exclude it from this passage. This careful approach ensures we’re studying the most authentic biblical text available to us today. Some similar omissions (in the ESV) can be found in Acts 8:37, Acts 28:29, Mark 16:9-20 and John 7:53-8:11, where later biblical manuscripts differ from the earliest ones. Older is generally better when it comes to manuscripts; however, older is not always better when it comes to Bible translations. Newer translations reflect increased access to copies of the original manuscripts, including the Dead Sea Scrolls discovered in 1947.
