One of the parts of my job I love most is helping people say what they intend when they’re teaching Scripture. Today that turned into a chance to introduce a colleague to one of my favorite free tools: StepBible.org.
She was writing about the moment Jesus met His disciples in the boat, when He said, “It is I.” On the surface, those words seem simple enough. But when you look at the Greek behind them, something incredible happens.
Jesus’s phrase “it is I” is written exactly the same way as God’s declaration to Moses in Exodus 3:14 —
ἐγώ εἰμι — “I AM.”
The New Testament Greek and the Greek translation of the Old Testament use the identical wording. The disciples wouldn’t have missed that connection. Imagine hearing Jesus speak the same divine name God used from the burning bush. They may have felt chills in that moment. That nuance is easy to miss in English, but tools like StepBible make it visible in seconds.
